Quality Education: Private Schools Sweep National Essay Competition Prizes

Member schools of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) received presidential awards after winning a national Essay completion meant to promote reading and writing among school children in primary and junior high schools (JHSs) in the country.

Among 10 students who emerged winners of the 2022 Junior Graphic National Essay Competition (JGNEC) with their exceptional essays selected from over 50 entries from the 16 regions, the overall winner, the second, and the third awardees are students of private schools from the Central region and the Greater Accra region.

Adjoa Nyameyie Fletcher, a student of Pere Planque School in the Central Region took the overall competition prize. She received an all-expenses paid trip to the United States of America, a laptop, a cash prize of GH¢500, and a certificate of the championship.

A student of Ebenezer Memorial Educational Centre, Amanda Osei Owusu Fosu, who came second also from the Central Region, received a tablet, a cash prize of GH¢500, and a certificate.

Mr. Charles C. Chintoh, the proprietor of Ebenezer Memorial Educational Centre-the second prize receiver’s school, was happy about the achievement of his student in the national competition.

Mr. Chintoh who doubled as the national treasurer of GNAPS believes that if an enabling environment exists for private schools, they will continue to contribute immensely to achieving the government of Ghana’s educational targets and also help the nation to run along with global educational targets such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Aside Esinam Oppong of the Unique Child International School, Teshie in the Greater Accra Region, the third prize winner who took home a tablet, cash prize of GH¢500 and a certificate, Ama Obeng-Baffoe and Wilhelmina D. Kuranchiewaa Frimpong of the Queen’s International School in the Greater Accra Region; Aniel Otuo Serebour of the Trinity Star School in the Greater Accra Region, and Vanessa Lamisi Asiedu of the St Bernadette Soubirous School, Dansoman in Accra were the other prize recipients who are having their education from private schools.

In total, 7 out of the 10 presidential award winners of the national essay completion are receiving their education and social training from member schools of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools -GNAPS.

Private schools are individuals’ or organizations’ or associations’ established and owned educational service centers that are known for quality teaching and learning in Ghana.

With 22,000 private schools in Ghana, the middle class prefers private schools for their children to public schools that are owned and managed by the state.

To most Ghanaians, close supervision in the private sector by owners and managers leads to proper, excellent, and quality teaching and learning.
